Perhaps the most ess ential and trenchant aspect of the film\, though\, is its treatment of S am's divided psyche. His anxiety is partially generated by the sports mi lieu\, which traditionally operates on a false and dated notion of mascu linity. The fact that this realm is claimed and zealously guarded by rea ctionary elements (both the film and the NHL\, which has supported it\, have been attacked by fundamentalist Christian groups) only makes the fi lm more significant.
