In his self-described "docu-fantasia," Guy Maddin paints a most unusual portrait of Manitoba's capital. Filmed in the director's trademark silent cinema style, Winnipeg is a myth-rich land full of grueling winters, sleepwalking denizens, department store-sponsored male beauty pageants and a multitude of "psychic possibilities". Maddin's voiceover veers from acerbic to poetic as he reflects on childhood traumas, mourns for lost landmarks and celebrates his one-of-a-kind hometown.
